Firefighter Qualifications

With the number and responsibilities of professional, as opposed to volunteer, firefighters on the rise, firefighter
qualifications are getting more strict, as well. Today, it is common for fire departments to require incoming firefighters
to complete a certificate program, and in most cases, to be trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
In addition, many colleges now offer degrees at several levels in fire service, including Associate's degrees,
Bachelor's degrees, and Master's degrees, which can all give you a significant advantage
when applying for firefighter positions.

National Fire Protection Association sets many of the fire standards in use today. This includes everything from
firefighter qualifications and methods for training firefighters to building codes and standards.
The NFPA, headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts, currently oversees more than 300 standards used
by firefighters, and represents fire departments across the country.
